Stylish New Guides from CP

reviews by Gordon Graham

CP has done an elegant job of bringing its handy reference book Caps and Spelling to the computer screen.

And the latest update to its printed Stylebook contains sensible advice on contemporary issues such as writing for the Web.

Pop-Up Caps and Spelling

15th edition (2001)
Cdn$19 Paper or CD
Cdn$29 Book & CD

The latest version of CP Caps and Spelling contains everything in the printed book and pops up on your screen whenever you need it.

For anyone unfamiliar with this title, it's a handy reference that lists hundreds of the words, names, and abbreviations most likely to cause headaches for writers.

Updated in 2001, this edition includes more coverage of Internet terms, pop culture and new words like "euro." The on-screen interface is simple, with a set of typewriter-like keys at the top and a clearcut menu at the left.

Using it is quick and easy. For instance, if you need the proper spelling of that huge American retail chain that's invaded Canada over the past few years, click the "W" and scan down the word list to find "Wal-Mart."

If you need overall guidelines on how to spell corporate names, click "Capitalization" on the left and then "Corporate and Promotional Names" from the topics in the drop-down list.

The disc is available for both Windows and Mac. It loaded in seconds on my Pentium, installing a crisp set of HTML pages that open speedily in either Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.

For Cdn$19, the on-screen version of CP Caps and Spelling is an affordable addition to your desktop that can easily save you from embarassing gaffes.

New CP Stylebook is Worth a Look

Patti Tasko, editor
12th edition (2002)
Cdn$32
trade paperback

The 12th edition of the Canadian Press Stylebook (the bible of most Canadian newsrooms) was completely updated for 2002.

Among the brand-new material is a chapter on writing for the Internet, which includes a lot of common-sense advice.

Online readers "are impatient and critical," it warns us. "If they can't find what they are looking for almost immediately, 70 per cent will move on to the next Web site." That sounds about right to me.

There's new material on writing headlines, Canada's freedom of information laws, and an updated list of countries and cities and what to call their inhabitants. Some memorable colour photos adorn the text.

The calm, sensible tone of the CP Stylebook reminds us that good writing is more about telling stories that engage our readers than winning points for grammatical correctness. This new edition is a welcome addition to any journalist's bookshelf.

To order any CP products, call (800) 434-7578 or check your local bookstore.
